The Yorkshire club thought they'd tied Kyle Hutton and John Fleck down to long term loan deals ahead of the close of the transfer window last week, but the registration of the players didn't come through before the deadline passed.
The Blades' Scott McCabe spoke to the official website, "It has been a very frustrating time for all concerned. We had expected the transfers to go through and were surprised when we were told they had not been completed in time."
The pair, both midfielders, were wanted by United on season long loan deals.
