The 24 year old has a chequered past. He had his contract terminated at former employers; Rotherham United and Yeovil Town, failing to turn up for pre-season training for his first club Crewe Alexandra.
Vale boss Micky Adams spoke to BBC Radio Stoke on Roberts' future, "If somebody treats their profession, his manager, team and supporters with the contempt he did, he's got a lot to do to get back anywhere near the side."
Roberts has a history of alcohol problems.
