The 20 year old left back arrives at the City Ground following former loanee Clint Hill's recall by his parent club Queens Park Rangers last week.
Speaking to the club's official website after securing the short term switch, Forest boss Steve Cotterill said, "Left backs are very difficult to come by and although he's only a young player I think he's got a good future ahead of him."
Cunningham spent time on loan with Leicester City last season.
