MIDDLESBROUGH FC: SWANS TO RETURN FOR BATES

The Northern Echo newspaper is reporting that Premier League side Swansea City will make a fresh approach for Middlesbrough defender Matthew Bates in the January transfer window.

The 24 year was the subject of an approach by the Swans in the summer but a concrete bid was not forthcoming. The inquiry however prompted the 'boro skipper to comment on his future at the Riverside.

"I know the situation, I'm in the final year of my contract and the club is obviously in a fairly well publicised position in terms of it's finances. The gaffer pulled me in and said there was a bit of interest, and we both agreed that we would see what happened. I was fine with it. I didn't want to leave, and I didn't ask to leave, but there's obviously a bigger picture to think of as well."

A fee of around £1.5 million has been mooted.
