MIDDLESBROUGH: BATES HAPPY AT 'BORO

Middlesbrough defender Matthew Bates has rejected claims he is after a move away from the club after he was linked to a number of teams in the transfer window.

The 24 year old interested Premier League newboys Swansea City in August but he has reiterated his desire to remain at the Riverside.

"I was never knocking on the gaffer's door saying I wanted to leave. I knew the situation with the club, I am in the last year of my contract and whatever was to happen would happen. I'm here now and I'm happy with that."

Despite stating his intent to stay at the club he has been with since the age of thirteen, Bates admits the interest from Swansea did catch his eye.

"When the initial interest first came in, it was an eye opener for me. It was the first time I've been playing for a club and there has been interest from elsewhere."

'Boro boss Tony Mowbray named Bates the club captain when he took the reigns last season.
