The former Derby and Notts County defender had spent the previous season with the U's. However he managed only a couple of appearances for Chris Wilder's men.
Hanson has represented England at under 18 level and will be looking for a consistent run in the first team, something he hasn't managed since graduating through the Derby County youth ranks four years ago.
