Preston defender Danny Devine has sustained a broken jaw after an 'incident' during a night out at the weekend.
Due to the injury the 18 year old will be out for up to five weeks.
Manager Phil Brown said, "It's a disappointment to me. I believe they were conducting themselves in the right manner, but at the same time they city centre at two in the morning is not the place to be."
It is thought that Devine was waiting for a taxi with some of his Preston colleagues when the youngster was attacked.
Brown spoke further, "As I understand it, Daniel Devine was struck with a blow that forced him to the ground. His team mates came to his assistance but I am pleased that they did not retaliate in any way to further inflame the situation."
Lancashire Police have confirmed that no charges have been bought and no complaint has been made by the player.
