The 28 year old had been on loan with the Shrimpers since the summer but manager Paul Sturrock has revealed that he was determined to secure the player, and other recent signing David Martin, fulltime.
"We wanted these players. They were our target players," Sturrock said in an interview with BBC Essex.
Timlin has featured sixteen times in the league for Southend this season.
