The 26 year old signed for the Magpies from Derby's rivals Nottingham Forest last year but has struggled to hold down a consistent first team place. Despite this Alan Pardew has decided against sending him out on loan.
Derby County boss Nigel Clough spoke to the Derby Telegraph about the approach, "We are looking at the loan market and we asked about James but he providing defensive cover at Newcastle. They have got a couple of injuries, so he cannot come out at the moment."
The Rams' first choice right back, John Brayford has been ruled out for the next four weeks which has prompted Clough to look for cover.
