Cobblers boss Gary Johnson has pinpointed the 27 year old's 300 appearances for the Spireites as a factor in bringing him to the club, "Derek is an experienced midfield player, a real warrior and just the sort of person and player we need at the moment."
"He is a 6 footer, a ball winnter and someone who gets from box to box and will give us a lot of experience in the middle of the park."
Niven has started just three league games for Chesterfield this season after being an important figure in their promotion push from League Two last year.
