Notts County's Jim Rodwell has come out fighting amidst criticism at the club's decision to play a friendly game with Juventus just two days before a league match.
The Magpies chief executive claims the friendly with the Italian side is an opportunity not to be missed despite the players having only 48 hours to recover before they face Walsall in a League One game.
"This is the chance of a lifetime and we were not going to turn it down. Of course we wish it wasn't on a Thursday. It's not perfect but what can you do? We couldn't say I'm playing darts on Thursday, I can't make it."
Juventus had requested Notts County play them in a match at their new stadium, the Juventus Arena on Thursday. The special relationship between the two clubs stems from the fact County modelled their black and white strip on that of the Serie A side.
It remains to be seen what the effect on the players will be, in an interview with the Sun newspaper striker Lee Hughes said, "It'll be one of the highlights of my career to play against Juventus in Turin. It would be unbelievable to stick one past Buffon and score the first goal there."
The post match press conference with County boss Martin Allen on Saturday evening should be interesting.
