The 34 year old, who was released during the summer by Premier League newboys QPR, has signed with the Magpies on a 'pay as you play' deal.
Speaking to local radio station, BBC Radio Nottingham, Mahon said, "I'm the sort of player that likes to put my physicality on the game, get amongst people, take and organise."
"I'm a winner. I want to be in teams that are pushing to be successful and the gaffer's no different."
Mahon's contract runs until January.
