Saturday saw score draws for both Hitchin and Hemel Hempstead Town. Ryan Blake scored for Hemel Hempstead in the 64th minute but the 'Tudors' were unable to hold out for an opening day victory and disappointingly conceded just before full time against Leamington FC. In contrast, Hitchin fought back to draw their game away at Banbury level in the 93rd minute thanks to a goal from Zak Burke.
'WE WILL IMPROVE' SAYS WILLIAMS
Canaries' boss Carl Williams is looking for a big improvement when his side comes up against Hemel Hempstead on Monday evening (kick off 7.45pm).
Williams felt Hitchin were "lack lustre" at Banbury and that the cutting edge was missing. "We didn't move the ball around quick enough and were often outnumbered in midfield. But we know what we need to do to out things right," he said.
It was not until the last 20 minutes that Hitchin started to ask questions of Banbury, insists Williams. "Jerome[Anderson] came on and we got behind their defence and brought players into the game," he says. "If we don't hold the ball up and keep giving the ball away cheaply, then we will struggle. We need to do better in this division to compete."
Williams will have John Frendo back to face Hemel. "John told me a long time ago he would not be available for the first game due to a long-standing commitment and I was comfortable with that. Obviously, we missed him, but he will be back."
There may other changes ahead, hints Williams. "By Monday night, I expect we will be a stronger side."

PAYNE RETURNS TO TOP FIELD
Former Hitchin manager Colin Payne returns to Top Field on Monday August 15 with his Hemel Hempstead side as the Canaries kick-off their home programme.
Payne retains a lot of affection for the club after his short spell at Top Field and was delighted that promotion was secured in May. "I have the utmost respect for Hitchin Town - it is a great club with superb support. I talk to Charlie every few days - I was really pleased for him when the club won promotion."
Friendships will be cast aside when the clubs meet on Monday (kick off 7.45pm). Hemel Hempstead are looking to improve on last season when they reached the Red Insure Cup final and finished in the lower half of the table.
Payne can call on some experienced striking talent in the form of Dennis Fenemore and Marvin Williams. There are further Hitchin connections with former Canary youth product Craig Rydeheard joining Payne in the summer as player-coach. Full back Danny May will also feature in the game.
Hemel's recent record at Top Field is good - Hitchin have won once in four league games and last season, Hemel won 2-1 in extra time in the Red Insure Cup.
