Corby Town's manager Tommy Wright was kind enough to answer a few questions for us last month. Read his thoughts on last season, pre-season preparations and the current campaign below.
How do you feel last season went for the club?
Last season was a long frustrating season
for everybody associated with Corby Town Football Club. We got ourselves into a
great position in the league to mount a serious play off charge, however we
were then hampered by off field financial problems which threatened to cripple
the club. Once that happened the side that we had built was quickly dismantled.
On a positive note we played some really entertaining football at times and
managed to reach the First Round Proper of the FA Cup.
What were some of the highs and lows of the 2013/14
campaign for you personally?
The lowest low was the last few months of
the season when the financial issues really took hold of the club. We had spent
so long building a good side and to see those lads leaving the club and not
getting paid wasn’t nice. It was also hugely demoralizing leading a team out
onto the pitch that you knew would most likely get beat. The highlight of last
season was definitely the FA Cup win away at Conference North side Colwyn Bay.
The players and fans were absolutely brilliant that day.
How has pre-season gone for you on a personal
level so far?
Pre-season has been really good. We have now
completed our pre-season friendly campaign with a great performance in our 2-1
win over Nottingham Forest XI. I've got the squad together that I wanted and
have managed to bring in all of my key targets. The lads have all gelled really
well as a team and have worked extremely hard in all of the games. There have
been some tough workouts against the likes of Leeds, Leicester, Brackley and
Forest, but everybody has come through it stronger for the experience and I can
have no complaints with our preparations for the new season.
We're quickly approaching the 2014/15 kick-off,
what are you looking forward to most this season?
I am itching to get started now to be
honest, I am counting down the days until Hitchin come to Steel Park and we can
get the season underway. Of course our priority is the Southern Premier League.
With new owners at the club and a more stable financial position we have
managed to build a side that I feel can compete well. There is a really
positive feeling around the place at the moment too and it is great to be a
part of. We really want to build on that this season. The FA Cup and FA Trophy
are also important to us and it would be nice to have a run in those
competitions. We have a strong squad and it will be fully utilised in order to
compete in every competition that we enter.
