Martyn Campbell is facing three months on the sidelines after surgeons discovered the extent of his knee injury during an operation this week.
In what he initially thought was a routine 'clean up operation', medical staff found he had torn the cartilage from the joint in his knee.
"The surgeons had to put it back into place and stitch the carilage back together. I'm now in a full leg brace and can't bend my knee. I'm off my work and am hobbling around on crutches."
Ayr boss Brian Reid may now be forced to scour the loan market in search of an experienced defender to replace Campbell.
