The young Hull City defender, comfortable at left-back or centre-back, says he intends to make the most of the temporary switch, "Hopefully I can get some experience and do the best I can."
"I've been playing in the reserves this season and also played a bit in pre-season, so it will be nice to back that up with some first team football with Grimsby."
Townsend has been given permission by Hull to feature for the Mariners in their FA Cup tie at the weekend.
