SOUTHAMPTON FC: MARTIN DISCUSSES SAINTS FITNESS REGIME

Southampton defender Aaron Martin has revealed the vigorous training methods used by manager Nigel Adkins.

The squad are sent for regular tests at Solent University where they are put through their paces in a series of activities, each designed to measure their levels of fitness and to compare them to those which they recorded during pre-season.

"The test is a tough run, but it is good because you get to see where you are and how much you've improved from the summer. They're looking at your max heart rate, the lactic measurement, everything really to make sure they know where you are and how much you've improved on since pre-season."

"It started off with getting our heart rates checked, blood pressure etc, then it's on to jump tests before going onto the treadmill to do more fitness testing."

Despite the hard work, Martin says he is happy to comply with the fitness regime as it is reaping huge benefits, evident in the team's performances on the field.

"From looking at the first ten games of the season we've finished strongly in every single game. I think we're one of the fittest teams in the league and I think that's helped us a lot at the moment because we're finishing matches so strong."
