MOTHERWELL FC: JENNINGS ARRESTED

Motherwell midfielder Steve Jennings has been arrested after an investigation into irregular betting patterns.

The inquiry surrounds a Scottish Premier League game last season between Motherwell and Hearts, in which Jennings was dismissed after swearing at the referee. The Association of British Bookmakers approached the police after a series of high figure bets were placed in the Liverpool area on the possibility of a player being sent off in the clash.

It is understood that Wayne Rooney's father and uncle are also amongst the nine people detained following the investigation.

Stewart Regan of the Scottish Football Association said, "The Scottish FA has received notification from the Gambling Commission that the Motherwell FC player, Steve Jennings, was arrested at his home today by Merseyside Police."

"Motherwell FC are aware of the situation and will issue a response in due course."
