Newton, an American based businessman, left the club last year but has returned for a second spell in which chairman Simon Corney hopes the Latics can take advantage of his financial nous.
"We have been in discussions with Mike for some time and are happy to have him back. Mike brings a deep, meaningful insight into the game and he is very popular with the management and players."
"He took a year out and there was a lot of speculation as to why. There were a few things he wanted to do, but he realised he likes it here and we are glad to have him back." Corney concluded.
