The twenty two year old sustained an ankle injury in training last week causing him to miss his side's defeat to Coventry on Saturday evening.
Rams boss Nigel Clough will wait to see how severe the midfielder's injury is before delving into the loan market.
"James is struggling with his ankle and we will know a bit more this week about how long he isi going to be out. If we feel as though we need a loan and can get the right one, we will try and do that."
